A new bibliometric study provides a comprehensive map of how research linking innovation to industrial performance has evolved over time, revealing a clear shift toward sustainability and digital transformation.

The study, published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, analyzed 2,712 peer-reviewed journal articles from the Scopus database, focusing on business, management, economics, and finance domains. Using advanced tools such as RStudio and the Bibliometrix R package, researchers conducted word frequency analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, and thematic evolution mapping.

The findings indicate a temporal progression in research focus: early studies centered on competitive strategies, while more recent work emphasizes sustainability, green innovation, and Industry 4.0. This trajectory mirrors broader global trends, including the rise of environmental stewardship and digital technologies in shaping industrial competitiveness.

“Contemporary innovation strategies are deeply intertwined with sustainability,” the authors note, highlighting a critical alignment between economic growth and environmental responsibility. The study also underscores the growing importance of digital technologies, such as the Industrial Internet of Things and smart manufacturing, in driving performance.

The research identifies key thematic clusters, including circular economy, dynamic capabilities, and open innovation, and shows how these themes have gained prominence over time.
